2009 VETERAN'S DAY PARADE, Elk Grove, CA
For those of you who attended this year's Veterans
Day Parade in Elk Grove, I think you will agree that this was the
largest and the best parade Elk Grove has ever held. A wonderful time
was held by all!
Article from the Elk Grove Citizen Newspaper:
"While the parade got under way at the traditional time at 11 a.m. on
the 11th day of the 11th month, marking the cessation of World War I in
1918, celebratory events got under way earlier at the Cosumnes Community
Services District (CSD) headquarters’ lawn on Elk Grove Boulevard.
Preceding the parade opening ceremony included the
reading of the names of Elk Grove veterans read by former United States
Marine Corps member Bruce Kaspari, and Parade Chairman and Elk Grove
City Council Member Sophia Scherman.
Numerous high school bands also participated in the
parade, including the Elk Grove, Sheldon, Pleasant Grove and Laguna
Creek high school bands.
Numerous other organizations participated including the 101st Airborne
Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
Norm DeYoung said the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot’s Association with their
chopper placed on a flatbed along with their Vietnam War traveling
museum was also a popular attraction. In addition, the World War II
Submarine Veterans Association, the Sacramento Flotilla of the Coast
Guard Auxiliary and other units participated in the parade.
This year, the Filipino-American Veterans was the honored unit. The
parade’s honorary grand marshal was American Legion District Six Vice
Commander Tony Arca, who served as commander of the Filipino American
Legion Post 604.
During World War II, Commander Arca served in the American armed forces
under Gen. Douglas McArthur in the Philippines from 1942 to 1945. He
then served in the United States Air Force until his retirement.
As the parade ended, participants and many spectators gathered at the
Elk Grove Regional Park for free hotdogs, potato chips and soft drinks."
